Professor Lyn Beazley AO Emerging Leader Award
21.10.2024

The Professor Lyn Beazley AO Emerging Leader Award aims to recognise and support early career researchers who have demonstrated exceptional promise and dedication in their scientific or clinical research endeavours.

The award is named in honour of RPH Research Foundation’s immediate past Board Chair Professor Lyn Beazley AO, in recognition of her leadership, advocacy of research and commitment to supporting the next generation of researchers.

The 2024 winner of the Professor Lyn Beazley AO Emerging Leader Award is Dr Martin Rabey.

Dr Martin Rabey is a clinician-researcher focusing on musculoskeletal pain such as low back pain, knee osteoarthritis and shoulder pain. Musculoskeletal pain is the world’s leading cause of disability and in 2018 cost the WA economy $1.4 Billion.

Pain is a complex, multidimensional, emergent disorder influenced by interactions between neurophysiological, psychological, social, environmental, pathological, lifestyle, and broader health factors over time.

Dr Rabey’s research looks at how these various factors interact to give us a greater understanding of the complex and emergent nature of musculoskeletal pain.

Since joining Royal Perth Hospital as an Advanced Scope Physiotherapist in orthopaedics, Dr Rabey has led two projects aiming to enhance service delivery. His current cutting-edge research is looking at people who are free from pain, or who have recovered from pain, to discover what keeps them pain-free. This will lead to new ways to help those in pain, reducing the burden of pain.
